Being surrounded all his life by people of diverse ethnic backgrounds, Evgeni took interest in the turbulent events happening all over the former socialist empire - the Soviet Socialist Republics became independent states, ethnic minorities in the new countries struggled (and in some places still do) to protect their interests.
