From its very birth, a hermit crab has to protect its abdomen, since it lacks a carapace. It would not survive without a shell to inhabit – one which it typically borrows from a deceased gastropod, and that it must constantly exchange for a bigger one as it growth continues. This strange anomaly illustrates the lyrical aspect of our shellfish, forced to constantly pursue its quest for an ideal home. It inspires all the more sympathy as we imagine that it feels the same anguish we do whenever we have to move from one place to the next, or allow ourselves to be locked up in an airplane cabin. This brief work, based on Ode à un bernard-l’ermite, is accompanied by a whole assortment of disparate texts – poems, essays, fables, notices, aphorisms, haiku – which form so many literary “shells” on the hermit crab’s condition – a crab-like metaphor of the human condition.
