" Ces Leçons pour la paix sont ma contribution au défi le plus urgent de l'humanité. Je veux, à ma place, encourager la paix. Je crois que la paix passe aujourd'hui par la réconciliation des croyants des grandes confessions sur les cinq continents. Je veux essayer d'analyser ce qui complique et grippe les rapports entre les traditions judéochrétiennes et les pays de confession musulmane. [...] Suivant mon habitude, je ferai référence à l'arrière-fond de la démographie comme témoin de l'état du monde et de sa santé. J'utiliserai la chronologie historique et ses grandes figures pour saisir les moments et les lieux de l'incompréhension qui a pu s'envenimer jusqu'à l'aboutissement d'une guerre endémique au Moyen-Orient, justifiée aujourd'hui par une "croisade" contre le mal en Irak, en Afghanistan, aux frontières du Pakistan, de l'Iran, d'Israël et jusque dans les banlieues des grandes métropoles occidentales. Je ne peux mettre de côté le livre de la Bible qui contient toute la sagesse du monde, et qu'on brandit dangereusement au nom d'un impérialisme anachronique, alors qu'il recèle pour moi, comme pour des centaines de millions d'hommes et de femmes, la Vie et l'Espérance. J'espère que ces "leçons" d'un vieux professeur, les plus sincères possibles, permettront à tout lecteur bienveillant d'avancer avec moi sur le chemin fragile de la paix. I think that today, peace must come through reconciliation between believers of the great confessions throughout the five continents. I would like to attempt an analysis of what complicates and stifles relations between Judeo-Christian traditions and the Muslim countries. [...] As usual, I will refer to a demographic background as a testimony to the state of the world today. I will use historical chronology and its great representations to identify the points in time and the places where incomprehension became acrimonious to the extent of an endemic war in the Middle East, justified today by the 'crusade' against evil in Iraq, Afghanistan, to the borders of Pakistan, Iran, Israel and even as far as the suburbs of great Western cities. I cannot simply lay aside the Bible, the book that contains all the wisdom in the world, and is now being dangerously brandished in the name of anachronic imperialism; while it contains, for me and for hundreds of millions of men and women, Life and Hope. I hope these 'lessons' from an old teacher, as sincere as they possibly could be, will allow all readers of goodwill to move forward with me on the fragile road to peace.'
