This book examines how governments around the world responded to the health emergency created by the COVID-19 pandemic. Before vaccines became available, non-medical interventions and mitigation public health policies were governments' main means to protect their publics. In every nation, politicians and governments were presented with a choice situation, and different choices were made. Public health policy tools came at a price, in economic, social, and ultimately electoral costs to the political incumbents. The book focuses on how far governments in individual countries went in issuing policies to mitigate the virus spread. Individual chapters each discuss COVID-19 policies in two or more countries within a regional or otherwise connected group. The chapters in the volume all inform about the country-specific facts and the political efforts to mitigate the pandemic. Authors discuss institutional and strategic explanations for the choices made by governments throughout the world as they sought to balance the often conflicting public health, economic, and electoral considerations.
