Sulfide rich soils are soils that contain elevated amount of iron sulfide minerals. This type of soil can produce strong sulfuric acid when drained, excavated or exposed to oxygen. The acidification might lead to serious problems such as toxic metal release, acid drainage contamination and corrosion of metallic and concrete structures. Therefore, the assessment of sulfide rich soils is very important to managing this type of soil. The MRM leaching test is developed for this purpose by MRM Konsult AB and Luleĺ University of Technology. The test simulates wetting-drying cycles of sulfide rich soils in the field and provides reliable assessment based on an assess system for acidification properties.
