The Derwent Valley Mills in Derbyshire became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in December 2001, confirming its significance as the birthplace of the factory system. The site is located along the River Derwent, stretching from Matlock Bath to Derby, which allowed eighteenth-century industrialists to exploit water power in order to produce cotton continuously. The model for Richard Arkwright's Cromford Mill and the corresponding workers' settlement were imitated by national and international industrial communities. Today, the site is administered by the Derwent Valley Mills Partnership and some of the mills are open to the public.
