Opis

This two-volume work explores wide-ranging debates on the idea of courage spanning Greek antiquity, the Christian and mediaeval periods, and the modern era. The teachings of courage in classical antiquity are based on discussions of epistêmê and competing theories of rational wisdom and truth. For early Christian and mediaeval thinkers, faith and debates about fortitude and fear of God take centre stage. By contrast, post-mediaeval perspectives revolve around the twin rules of polis and physis and related debates on how love connects with fear, freedom with fate, well-being with suffering in this world, and the exercise of power with obedience to the ruling order. This second volume delves into various theories of courage from early modern times to the present. It investigates the profound impact of the social and natural sciences, evolutionism, and the existentialist movement on moral thinking. Courage as seen through the lens of reason or faith, or a combination thereof, is supplanted by the protection of people's best interests, the passions and powers of the human will, and the rule of active energy in all aspects of life. These new ideas, paradoxically, herald the end of the ethics of courage while also undermining the courage of ethical thinking. Courage is no longer an end in itself, nor is it a means to achieve happiness "at the end." Regardless of what Gandhi, Tillich, and Foucault have to say about the subject, late modernity sees a marked loss of interest in courage as an idea worthy of conceptual investigation. Debates about the morality of courage give way to the value-free science of resilience, which looks at how people can recover from past trauma and find wellness, primarily in the realm of physis.
