This collection of stunning black-and-white photographs showcases Washington State's Olympic Peninsula: the Pacific Coast, rain forests, river valleys that support those forests, and the Elwha River. The essay by Charles Wilkinson, an authority in Western land and water law, describes development in the west, the attitudes toward water use, and the laws that this use was based on, and it looks at the ways in which times have changed. Almost one hundred years after their construction, two dams placed on the Elwha River are scheduled to be removed. This will allow salmon runs, prevented by the dams from reaching their spawning areas, to be restored on one of the most productive and diverse salmon rivers in the country. The book deals with questions that extend far beyond the Peninsula as the images and the text ask us to acknowledge the less tangible values of the resource of water.
