This book contributes to a "rethinking" of Canadian aid on four levels. First, by undertaking a collective rethink of the foundations of Canadian aid. Second, through an analysis of how the Canadian government is rethinking Canadian aid, with a greater focus on the Americas as well as specific countries and themes (such as mothers, children and youth, and fragile states); increased involvement of the private sector (particularly Canadian mining companies); and greater emphasis on self-interest. Third, by rethinking where Canadian aid is or should be heading, with recommendations for improved development assistance. Finally, by highlighting how a serious rethink of aid itself is required-the concept, its relation to non-aid policies that affect development in the Global South, and the rise of new providers of development assistance, especially "emerging economies." Each of these areas holds implications for Canada, its development policies, and its declining influence in the morphing global aid regime. Contributors include 21 scholars and practitioners, with several straddling both worlds, in all stages of careers. The 16 chapters are designed to reach a variety of audiences, including academics, students, policymakers, as well as practitioners in governmental and nongovernmental organizations.
