Auf katholischer wie auf evangelischer Seite hielt sich lange die Überzeugung, dass Martin Luther nach dem frühen Konflikt mit der Kirche die Sakramente als wirksame Mittel des Heils abgeschafft habe. Seit annähernd 50 Jahren konnte im lutherisch-katholischen Dialog gezeigt werden, dass das "allein aus Gnade im Glauben an die Heilstat Jesu Christi" nicht als Ausschluss der Sakramente und des sakramentalen Lebens der Kirche zu verstehen ist, sondern als ein in der Bibel begründetes Miteinander von Rechtfertigung, Glaube, Sakramenten und Amt. Katholiken und Lutheraner haben gemeinsam gelernt, die überkommenen Vorurteile und die sich daraus entwickelnden Kontroversen zu überwinden. Heute können sie die Anliegen der Theologie Martin Luthers gemeinsam in einer ökumenischen Relecture neu verstehen lernen. Die in diesem Band aufgenommenen Beiträge beruhen auf Vorträgen von Friederike Nüssel, Angelo Maffeis, Theodor Dieter, Jari Jolkkonen, Kurt Koch und Gerhard Ludwig Müller, die während einer Tagung an der Päpstlichen Universität Gregoriana in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Päpstlichen Rat zur Förderung der Einheit der Christen und dem Johann-Adam-Möhler-Institut im Frühjahr 2017 aus Anlass des Reformationsgedenkjahres gehalten wurden. Martin Luther and the Sacraments] Catholics and Protestants likewise long believed that Luther had abolished the sacraments as an effective means of salvation after the early conflict with the church. Since about 50 years it has been shown in the Lutheran-Catholic dialogue that "by grace alone, in faith in Christ's saving work" should not be understood as exclusion of the sacraments and the sacramental life of the church, but as an interrelation - based on the bible - of justification, faith, and ministry. Together, Catholics and Lutherans have learned to overcome old prejudices and controversies. Today, they can develop a new understanding of the concerns of the theology of Martin Luther, through a common relecture. The contributions to this volume are based on lectures given by Friederike Nüssel, Angelo Maffeis, Theodor Dieter, Jari Jolkkonen, Kurt Koch, and Gerhard Ludwig Müller at a conference at the Pontifical Gregorian University in spring 2017, held on the occasion of the anniversary of the Reformation.
