This inspirational work presents a sketch of the earliest members of the 'Shut-In Society' founded by a 19th-century American author and social activist, Mrs. Nathaniel Conklin. After becoming disabled in 1874, Conklin became interested in helping other women who were also shut in from society. She created the Shut-In Society and sought out other disabled women to join. By 1896, it had over 2,000 members globally and was an organized society with an advisory board.
