The year leading up to Ariel Sharons 2001 election as Israels prime minister was a particularly dire time for the country. At Camp David, Yasser Arafat had rejected the American-backed Israeli peace offer. Violence and terror became a near daily affair in Israel, thus effectively destroying the seven year-long Oslo initiative.
