This book presents an empirical test of Gottfredson and Hirschi's revised self-control theory as articulated by Hirschi (2004). The self-control measure was used to determine its predictive utility in explaining risky sexual behavior among college students. For the purposes of this study, risky sexual behavior was defined as respondents participation in unprotected sex, casual sex, and number of lifetime sexual partners. Survey instruments were administered to two non- random samples of undergraduate students in a northeastern university in the United States. The findings indicate that the revised self-control measure is related to reports of risky sexual behavior. That is, individuals low in self-control are more likely to report involvement in unprotected sex, casual sex, and have more lifetime sexual partners.
