Understanding and constructively using natural sound in the ocean has become of prime importance with the scientific revolution precipitated by the end of the Cold War, and the realization of the importance of responsible global management. This was the first meeting on the subject since the fall of the Soviet-Western barriers, and the proceedings include contributions from premier researchers from the former Soviet Union. This meeting also specifically targetted the exploration of the idea of using natural sound as a nonintrusive probe to monitor the ocean environment. The proceedings present the work on scientists including, Michael Buckingham, Bill Carey, Lawrence Crum, Nikolai Dubrovsky, David Farmer, Michael Longuett-Higgins, Bill Kuperman, Boris Kuryanov, Hank Medwin, Ken Melville and Vladimir Shchurov.
