Städtische Orte sind das so dynamische wie umstrittene Terrain des urbanisierten 21. Jahrhunderts. Der öffentliche Raum, vom Tahrirplatz in Kairo bis zum Zuccotti-Park in New York, ist zu einem Kulminationspunkt neuer gesellschaftlicher Entwürfe avanciert; in New Downtowns , etwa in der HafenCity Hamburg, werden neue Funktionsmischungen erprobt; der Boom von Baugruppen und ähnlichen Partizipationsformen drückt den Anspruch der Bürger aus, ihren Wohn- und Lebensraum tatsächlich mitzugestalten; temporäre Kultur- und Stadtteilprojekte wie das jährliche Lendwirbel-Festival in Graz sind Bestrebungen selbstorganisierter Initiativen, den städtischen Raum temporär zu einer Zone kultureller Interventionen umzuprogrammieren und dadurch neuen Praktiken der Kulturproduktion und des Stadtlebens zur Sichtbarkeit zu verhelfen. Dieses Buch analysiert anhand exemplarischer Geographien städtischer Orte die Neuformierungen von Urbanität im 21. Jahrhundert unter gänzlich neuen sozialen, politischen, kulturellen und ökonomischen Bedingungen.
