Book synopsis

This book draws on Merleau-Ponty's work on the§interdependence of self, other and world to offer a new perspective on ethics and ethical failure.§§As per traditional§accounts, in this book, the problem is initially examined as an epistemological issue, a question of knowing that others are§minded as we are. Merleau-Ponty's§philosophy offers another way of approaching this problem of the Other, as the§Other of concrete practices and concerns, and this leads inevitably to an§ethical analysis. The issues around epistemic access thus make way for the more§vexing issues of ethical responsiveness. The overall contention of this project§is that it is possible to identify an implicit ethics in Merleau-Ponty's work on§the basis of his accounts of embodiment, primordial percipience, reversibility§and his non-dual ontology, and these implicit ethics find significant empirical§support in current neuroscience and in developmental psychology.§§Establishing§ethics and ethical motivations on a non-religious and non-metaphysical basis§which takes full account of the nature of human subjects - that is, that human§subjects are embodied, perceptual, intersubjective beings - results in clarification on both the limitations and intuitive appeal of current ethical§frameworks. §
