Despite its potential importance for growth and §development, only a handful papers either empirical §or theoretical have directly addressed the §determinants of and returns to firm-level on-the-job §training in developing countries. Yet many strands §of research point to training as an important source §of human capital accumulation in these economies. §This monograph aims to describe in a comprehensive §way the determinants of, as well as the returns to, §training for a set of African workers and firms §operating in five different countries. It looks at §many of the standard explanations offered in the §training and labor literature developed with regard §to the developed world, while also asking several §questions very specific to the African experience, §in particular the HIV/AIDS epidemic that emerges §during the 1990s.
