Since cemeteries were not discovered at Lerna, most of the skeletal remains published in this volume are from the Middle Helladic, when burials were placed under houses. A distinction between the meat-eating 'aristocrats' buried in Shaft Graves and protein-deprived 'common people' is suggested, while evidence for widespread malaria shows that Lerna was a marshy, unhealthy place. The author's claim that skeletal remains provide evidence for a change in physical type around 2,000 B.C., with intruders from Turkey and the Balkans disrupting indigenous society, remains controversial.
