The purpose of this book is to show that the Middle Ages -in the golden age of its scholasticism- constructed a rather vast realm of political thought that far surpassed the meagre and rare sketchy ideas proposed by political scientists, as well as by isolated "precursors." This construction based upon theological and philosophic reasoning ultimately led-at the end of the thirteenth century-to the notion of what I call a "statist republic" which would combine the universality of humankind with the consideration of a specific group. In some ways, this was an early form of what would much later become the modern or contemporary nationstate.A.B.One of the world's leading authorities on the Middle Ages, Alain Boureau is the Director of Graduate Studies at the école des hautes études en sciences sociales1. Other notable works he has also published in this collection include Alter histoire (co-authored by D.Milo) and L'Evénement sans fin (Récit et christianismeau Moyen Age).
