Book synopsis

Excerpt from The Isolation of Japan, an Exposé of Japan's Political Position After the War The author has been handed a number of able criticisms of his work, The Problem of Japan, written by the very competent critics on the staffs of leading Dutch journals, to wit: - the Handelsblad, the Nieuwe Rotterdamsche Courant, the Nieuws van den Dag, the Maasbode, the Utrechtsche Dagblad, the Indische Gids, and the Nieuwe Financier en Kapitalist, which take the author to task for what they assume to have been an ill-timed forecast of Germany's future attitude toward Japan and the problems of the Far East that are to emerge out of the recent world war. The work was completed and ready to come out of the hands of the printer on October 5, 1918, more than a month prior to the signing of the armistice between Germany and her enemies, and the aforesaid critics quote the following extract from the author's Introduction with the suggestion that the writer had evidently not foreseen the new situation that arose out of Germany's defeat in the war, and they intimate that the forecast would not have been made if the author had been able to foresee the swift march of events after October 5 which ended in the acceptance by Germany of the very severe terms of the armistice signed on November 11.
