Are there common specific patterns in the Tense-Mood-Aspect systems of creoles? Do creoles constitute a structural type of language? In this thorough description of the Tense-Mood-Aspect (TMA) system of contemporary Hawai'i Creole English (HCE), the system is described on the language's own terms, in order to provide as objective as possible an analysis. The language-internal analysis is based on extensive data, both written and spoken, collected through repeated fieldwork. Once defined, the HCE TMA system is placed in a cross-linguistic perspective, by use of large-scale typological studies. The general implications of this study are that, with respect to the TMA system, HCE does not notably deviate from overall tendencies of other, non-creole, languages of the world. The study also shows that there is variation in the HCE TMA system, both with respect to geography and register. Moreover, it shows that the HCE TMA system differs notably from the system in Standard English.
