The thirty-two far-ranging historical and biographical essays written between the years 1949 and 1978, which make up this collection, illustrate in one way or another the divergences of thought and attitude in Carr's post-Second World War world from those prevailing in the world before the war of 1914 and the Russian revolution, in which the author grew up.
