El gran mandamiento del Deuteronomio, tal como se expresa en el Shemá Israel de Dt 6, recitado diariamente por los judíos, conlleva una gran exigencia: el servicio exclusivo a YHWH. Esta exigencia tardó tiempo en elaborarse en Israel durante celebraciones de la alianza. Aquí se ofrecen cuatro textos, testigos de esta elaboración: en primer lugar Dt 10,12?11,17 (sin duda el texto más antiguo), después Dt 6,4-25, una parte del cual se cita en Dt 81-20, y por último Dt 4,1-40, que se debería a la mano del último redactor, en el momento en que el libro del Deuteronomio adquiere la forma final. Con estos cuatro textos comentados paso a paso entramos naturalmente en la teología del libro.
