Girolamo Donatos Übersetzung der Darstellung der aristotelischen Seelenlehre durch Alexander von Aphrodisias (ca. 200 n. Chr.) teilte im Jahr 1495 die Aristoteliker der Renaissance in zwei Lager. Während die Averroisten des Mittelalters die Seelen der Menschen zwar für sterblich, den allen Menschen gemeinsamen Intellekt aber für unsterblich hielten, lehrte Alexander, dass auch der menschliche Intellekt individuell und sterblich sei. Dieser Dissens in der Seelenlehre führte dazu, dass auch im Verhältnis zwischen Theologie und Philosophie, zwischen metaphysisch begründeter und auf sinnlicher Wahrnehmung beruhender Naturlehre tiefgreifende Neuerungen möglich wurden.
