Als Manuel Forcano seinen Gedichtband "El tren de Bagdad - Der Zug nach Bagdad" schrieb, dachte er nicht an Zugattentate und nicht an eine bombardierte Stadt: "Es ist gelogen, dass es in der Wüste nicht regnet", sagt der Dichter, "und es ist gelogen, wenn Bagdad eine Brutstätte der Gewalt und Terroranschläge genannt wird. Genauso findet man dort all die Wonnen, die aus dem Orient einen Idealort gemacht haben." Und Forcano kennt die Orte und Kulturen des nahen Ostens aus eigener Anschauung, abseits der Schlagzeilen und Klischees. Aber seine Gedichte sind keine Reportagen und keine Reiseberichte, sondern Erinnerungsprotokolle einer Sehnsucht, in der der Traumort Orient, seine Geschichte und Monumente und die sinnliche Attraktion, die von seinen Menschen ausgeht, miteinander verschmelzen. "Es ist ein großes Buch mit einem einzigen Gedicht, das von einer Reise zum Begehren, zur Hoffnung, zur Illusion und zur Liebe spricht", sagt der Dichter Francesc Garriga über das Werk.
