Regarding sexuality and Wehrmacht during the occupation of the Netherlands, historians and the public have hitherto only discussed female sexuality. In terms of the sex of soldiers this is problematic because the underlying narratives are locating soldierly sex in the non-public sphere, and tend to portray soldiers as friendly enemies. This results in a neglect of the political import of the soldiers' practices and nourished the idea of male sexuality as a 'natural' part of wars. In contrast, the focus in this study is on the perspective of soldiers and shows on the one hand that also friendly behavior and 'normal' sexual relationships were part of National Socialist fantasies, and on the other it makes clear that soldiers were having a stake in sexual politics and were able to shape politics through their practices.
