The most common measure of student academic achievement is the grade point average (GPA). If the student is enrolled at an institution that offers distance learning alternatives, the student will have a choice of venue that may have unforeseen consequences, should the mean final course grade of one venue be higher than another. This study compared nearly 54,000 final course grades (~20,000 on campus; ~34,000 online) of students enrolled at a large university. Statistical calculations were made using three groups of data: all final grades, undergraduate final grades, and graduate final grades. Results indicated a statistically significant difference between the two venues for all three sets of data. Institutions of higher learning that offer both online and alternative learning venues should perform a similar statistical analysis of final grades to insure relative equality between venues. Students should be informed of the potential impact of venue choice in this and similar scenarios if analyses show significant venue differences in final course grades.
