Situated at the mouth of the River Dart, Dartmouth not only enjoys a stunningly beautiful location, but has a long tradition of maritime, commercial and naval activity, evidence of which is still visible in the town's architecture and surrounding geography. The views, buildings and monuments of modern Dartmouth tell the story of the town's rich history stretching back to Anglo-Saxon times. Over the centuries Dartmouth has thrived as a seaport, developing buildings and quays, which saw ships of the Crusades assembling in the harbour, trade flourishing with Newfoundland and Europe and vessels preparing and departing for the D-Day landings. The Admiralty began officer training on the river in 1863 before completing construction of Britannia Royal Naval College, and pleasure use on the river has grown since the first Dartmouth Regatta in 1822. Castles at the mouth of the river have protected Dartmouth since the fourteenth century, and the merchants' houses of the seventeenth century are still part of the fabric of the town. The photographs of Dartmouth Through Time portray a town with a proud heritage, remarkably preserved, but continuing to have a bustling harbour, successful tourist industry and a thriving local community.
