Book synopsis

Excerpt from The British Essayists, Vol. 45 of 42: With Prefaces Biographical, Historical and Critical Vicesimus Knox, the author of the following, as well as of other publications, was a native of London, where he was born in the year J 752. He received his education under the affectionate superintendance of his father, who was Master of Merchant-Tailors' School, and had been Fellow of St. John's College, Oxford. The author of the 'Winter Evenings,' obtained a scholarship, and afterwards a fellowship at the same college. Through the interest of his father with the Merchant-Tailors Company, Vicesimus Knox was appointed master of Tunbridge-school, which is under the patronage of that opulent corporation. He retained this situation, from the time of his appointment, to the year 1812, when he resigned it in favour of his son, the Reverend Thomas Knox, who is the present master.
