Body Narratives deals with changes in the perception and representation of the human body and its pictorial uses in early modern England. Alterations in the scientific knowledge of the human body, Susanne Scholz argues, have their counterpart both in the disciplinary discourses of the body and in the representational patterns of political iconography. In various readings of the courtly literature of Elizabethan England, she traces the reciprocity of the somatic and the social as it informs images and narratives of the emerging English nation, of the inviolable body of Queen Elizabeth and of overseas territories. In the light of feminist and postcolonial theories she describes the emergence of modern notions of sexual, national, and 'racial' difference as inscribed in the very essence of the body.
