This edited collection explores the rich and diverse output of compositions by women across the last century. Highlighting the contexts in which music by women is written, performed and taken account of, the book considers the musicological, industrial and personal contexts faced and endured by women in the creative fields. Offered from a plethora of distinct and highly invested perspectives on women working in and around composition from Australia, America and beyond, this book presents a century of women creating music against the odds. With twenty four chapters from leading and up and coming scholars, the collection is grouped into three parts: historical and present-day investigations of women's composition; the state of the industry today viewed through the creation of new music by women; composers' and performers' personal accounts of music creation. Situation its range of topics within current feminist thinking, the collection draws together the themes that have pertained to scholarship on women's music since the advent of 1970s feminist criticism.
