This book provides an intimate, ethnographic account of the everyday lives of artisans in the Telangana state of Southern India, who have historically been associated with the region's murals, narrative cloth scrolls, and ritual masks and figurines. Taking as its central focus the way in which artisans 'talk about' and uniquely author the history of their craft and practice, this study reimagines the boundaries of craft practice. In so doing, it interrogates what it is to be craftsperson, exploring the simultaneous and juxtaposing histories that artisans assemble through narratives about work, home and identity. By identifying a plurality of contexts across which the different experiences of craft can be located, the volume reveals new epistemological possibilities by identifying the different registers through which knowledge is created, shared and remembered.
