Éric Weil zieht in seinem Hauptwerk die Konsequenzen aus der grundlegenden Einsicht, dass die Freiheit nicht auf die Vernunft reduziert werden kann. Die Philosophie ist nur eine Möglichkeit, nicht aber notwendiges Schicksal der Freiheit. Für den die Vernunft wählenden Philosophen geht es darum, von dieser Grundentscheidung aus den Status und den Sinn der Philosophie, die Tatsache und den Sinn der Ablehnung der Philosophie bzw. der radikalen Gewalt, neu zu bedenken. Dabei reicht es nicht hin, zu behaupten, der die Gewalt Ausübende sei im Angesicht der Vernunft im Unrecht, denn seine Einstellung lehrt ja den Philosophen zu begreifen, dass seine eigene Wahl der Philosophie nicht a priori aus der Vernunft abgeleitet werden kann. Die Idee einer Begründung, einer Rechtfertigung, ist daher nur zweitrangig - sie ist nur für denjenigen von Bedeutung, der sich dazu bestimmt, sich die Frage des Sinns seiner Wahl zu stellen. *** In his major works, Éric Weil traces the consequences of the fundamental insight that freedom cannot be reduced to reason. Philosophy is just one possibility, but not the inevitable fate of freedom. The philosopher who chooses reason must use this fundamental decision as a basis to reconsider the status and meaning of philosophy, the fact and meaning of the rejection of philosophy or radical violence. It is not sufficient to say that those who practice violence are committing an injustice against reason, for the philosopher's approach allows him to see that his own choice of philosophy cannot be a priori derived from reason. The idea of motivation or justification is thus merely a subordinate question - it has significance only for those who decide to question the sense of their choice.
