Book synopsis

This collection of Tiang oral literature is part of the material recorded on three field trips to Djaul, an island eight miles off the west coast of New Ireland. There were about 800 Tiang speakers at the time of collection (circa 1972), all living in five villages and numerous hamlets at the southeast end of the island. There are many kinds of Tiang magic spells, songs and chants, reflecting in their diversity the range of interests and activities of the traditional Tiang society, among others: asumilau (fishing magic), kepkayvey (to increase the bravery of men and dogs for fighting); mesiung (garden magic); kukui (rain and sun control); sivasat and kukurang (to make the sea rough and calm, respectively); alelep (love magic); bungsusus (to make children grow). This book was originally published in 1973.
